On September 6^th 2017, at Center of Medical Innovation and Translational Research. Osaka University Hospital, Mr. Lim, Rak-Keun, the Korean Economic Daily interviewed our team member for a newspaper in Korea about cooperation with industries and research organizations for drug discovery and medical device development at the Osaka University Hospital.

From our team, Akira MYOI, Director of Medical Center for Translational Research and Clinical Research (MTR), Daisaku NAKATANI, Head of Global Clinical Research Support Office (GCRSO), Yasushi MATSUMURA Director of Dept. of Medical Informatics and Deputy Director Toshihiro TAKEDA responded this interview.

Although Mr. Lim’s current affiliation is Bio & Healthcare Business Department in the Korea Economic Daily, his original background is economic. Utilizing these economic knowledge, he asked not only on Research and Development(R & D) efforts for the nation's academia but also the fusion of medical and economic, such as cooperation between Osaka University and companies.

In addition, we introduced the efforts on MTR and Dept. of Medical Informatics with some slides, and later provided information on the translational research projects that Osaka University hospital has been working on so far.

From the experience Mr. Lim was graduated from Kyoto University, he spoke very fluent Japanese and had done enough preliminary study of Osaka University Hospital, the interview went through very peacefully from the beginning to the end.

At the end, we gave a brief tour of the center and promised to keep in touch for the future interview article.

오사카·고베·교토에 '재생의료 클러스터'…산-학-병-연 손잡고 기초연구에 임상까지

일본 오사카 근교 스이타시에 있는 오사카대병원. 이 병원은 일본 대학병원 중에서 산학협력으로 유명한 곳이다. 병원 부지 안에는 9층짜리 최첨단 의료이노베이션센터(COMIT)가 자리잡고 있다. 나카타니 다이사쿠 오사카대 의대 교수(사진 왼쪽)는 “오사카대병원 연구진과 기업 연구진이 손잡고 기초연구부터 임상시험까지 한 지붕 아래서 협력하고 있다”고 했다.

Osaka University Hospital is located in Suita City where located in the suburb of Osaka City, is known as the most famous university hospital in industry-academia-government collaboration. They have a new 9 story building named Center of Medical Innovation and Translational Research (CoMIT) on the hospital premises. Dr. NAKATANI who is the associate professor of Osaka University School of Medicine explained that here university researchers and researchers from outside companies worked from basic research to clinical trials together, and everyone is working diligently together “under one roof”.
COMIT에서 중개임상연구 책임을 맡고 있는 묘이 아키라 미래의료센터장(사진 오른쪽)은 “기초연구부터 임상시험까지 26개 기업과 29개 프로젝트를 공동으로 하고 있다”며 “일본 최대 의료기기업체 테루모와 손잡고 심부전 치료에 사용하는 심장근육 시트 상용화에 성공했고 쥬가이제약과는 세계적 베스트셀러가 된 류머티즘관절염 치료제 악템라를 개발했다”고 말했다.

Akira MYOI, Director of Medical Center for Translational Research and Clinical Research (MTR), responsible for the translational research told that currently, from basic research and clinical trials, we are collaborating with 26 outside companies to proceed the 29 projects together, and we successfully done the commercialization of muscle seat for the treatment of heart failure through collaborative research with one of the largest Japanese medical equipment company. In the past, with Japanese major company, we developed the rheumatoid arthritis treatment which became the world wide best seller.

고베의료산업도시도 일본 내 대표적인 바이오 클러스터다. 고베항 인근 인공섬 ‘포트 아일랜드’에 자리잡은 고베의료산업도시는 일본 내 바이오 클러스터로는 최대 규모다. 다케다약품공업, 후지필름, 이화학연구소(RIKEN) 등 340여 개 기업과 연구소가 모여 공동 연구 등을 하고 있다. 유도만능줄기세포(iPS세포)를 활용한 임상시험이 이곳에서 이뤄지고 있다. 고베시는 의료산업도시에서의 사업화 지원, 건물 증축 등에 올해에만 41억9700만엔(약 419억7000만원)의 예산을 지원한다.

일본이 차세대 줄기세포 분야에서 앞서가는 데는 산업계와 대학, 연구소와 병원이 하나로 연결된 클러스터들이 한몫하고 있다. 다케다 히로시 고베대 총장은 “정부와 기업의 지원을 받아 대학 연구소를 캠퍼스 밖에 세워 활발하게 산학협력에 나서고 있다”고 말했다. 고베대는 진단검사 전문업체 시스멕스의 기부를 받아 포트 아일랜드에 지난 4월 의대 연구소를 개설했다.

교토대 iPS연구소(CiRA)는 일본 재생의료 클러스터의 선봉에 있다. CiRA가 기업과 공동 연구한 건수는 2008년 19건에 불과했지만 지난해 202건으로 늘었다. 일본 최대 제약사 다케다약품공업은 지난해부터 CiRA와의 공동 연구에만 10년간 200억엔(약 2000억원)을 투자하기로 했다.

지난달 세계 최초로 혈소판 제제 양산 기술을 개발한 바이오벤처 메가카리온은 CiRA에서 혈소판 제제 생산에 필요한 iPS세포를 제공받는다. 생산, 품질 관리 등은 다른 바이오 기업들과 손을 잡았다.

고토 다다하루 일본제약공업협회 이사장은 “교와하코기린은 도쿄대, 나고야시립대와 손잡고 항체의약품 포텔리지오를, 오노약품은 교토대와 손잡고 면역항암제 옵디보를 개발했다”며 “산·학·병·연 협력이 성과를 내온 만큼 재생의료 분야에서도 조만간 가시적인 성과가 나올 것”이라고 말했다.
